Post-Franklin Community Garden Welcomes Volunteers
The Post-Franklin Community Garden is a partnership between the community, the Post Foundation and the Battle Creek Community Foundation. The garden is located on Cliff Street where Euclid Street ends. The garden partnership has made it possible to provide many families and individuals on fixed incomes in our community with access to fresh vegetables. Access to fresh vegetables is important as it allows individuals to improve their basic nutrition and daily diets. The Haven of Rest has also benefited from this community garden—excess is taken to the Haven. The garden has produced over 1500 pounds of fresh produce.
The garden is entering its fourth year and the core group of volunteers is solidifying and working to encourage others to participate and become long term active partners. Our basic premise is 30 minutes of sweat equity each visit will allow you to equitably share in the harvest. There are several tasks that individuals can perform in order to fulfill the 30 minutes of sweat equity that do not require direct manual labor—there is something everyone can do. This allows for inclusivity and values all that come to participate in the garden. We encourage all generations and members of the community to join us in this community partnership.
